Olhao Mayor Francisco Leal.A project to improve and enlarge the fishing harbour in Olhau has been presented to the Regional Development and Co-ordinating Commission of the Algarve.

Prior to its approval, the two-million-euro investment project, which was designed by the Ports and Maritime Transport Institute, is currently undergoing the public consultation process, which lasts until October 10. According to the proposed plans, the Olhao harbour - the most important fishing harbour in the region - will see its size expanded with the construction of a sheltered area to the east of the harbour entrance, which will be equipped with breakwaters and with space for 314 fishing boats. In addition, the work will also include the building of a slipway and new on-shore support facilities such as 154 storage warehouses, changing rooms, an area for the storage of fishing nets, space for laying up boats on land and water, and drainage, electricity and telecommunications networks.The project also foresees the construction of 57 new parking spaces for vehicles, as well as improvements to the landscaping of the surrounding area. According to Olhao Mayor Francisco Leal the building works should start before the end of this year and should be completed by mid 2009. The Olhao fishing harbour was inaugurated in 1956.

Walker Bay Boats produces a range of small craft which are available with sail kits and accessories to transform them into ridgid inflatables or sailing dinghies. Designed to be lightweight and easy to handle, the phiosophy behind these portable, affordable dinghies is to make boating accessible as possible. The range in now being distributed in Portugal by Marina Formosa.
Made of high impact marine composite, they are built to be tough and can be used as tenders or fun boats. All have a wheel in the keel so they are easy to transport.

The boats are customised by using an add on system of accessories. For example, you use the “add-a-tube” system to transform a basic hull into a rigid inflatable dinghy to make it more stable. Similary, the “add-a-sail” kit allows you to convert a boat into a sailing dinghy and different rigs are available to offervarying performance characteristics.The boats are available in various colour combinations and you can choose different boat/engine packages. The fair runs from the 22nd of August until the 31st of August and includes over 800 exhibitors with crafts, food and company stalls. There are also animal exhibits and shows and a different musical concert each night.
Marina Formosa, the working boatyard in Olhao, just east of Faro, will be exhibiting chandlery, boats, paints and services and will be exhibiting alongside Calypso boats who manufacture GRP boats up to 9.6 metres, here in Algarve.
